PTI-backed independent candidates to join Sunni Ittehad Council: Barrister Gohar

Independent candidates supported by PTI, who secured victories in the National Assembly, as well as the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assemblies during the elections, will become members of the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), as per PTI leader Barrister Gohar Ali Khan’s declaration on Monday.

This decision comes after an official pact with the SIC.

‘Our elected representatives have provided us with sworn statements, and now we’re formally announcing their induction into the Sunni Ittehad Council,’ said Gohar at a news briefing.

He pointed out that allocation of the reserved seats in both the federal and provincial legislatures is proportional to each party’s size within those legislative bodies.

‘To safeguard our allocated seats and protect our legislators, we have reached a structured agreement for our candidates to enter the SIC,’ Gohar elaborated, noting, ‘Today, PTI will present this paperwork to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) as well.’

Gohar also mentioned their intent to request the ECP to allot the reserved seats reflecting the parties’ representation in writing.

Echoing these views, PTI’s Omar Ayub, who is their candidate for prime minister, expressed that allying with the SIC will bolster their strength in the National Assembly.

Omar Ayub predicted that with this strategic alliance, PTI would be well-positioned to form a government.
