Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, the emir of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), has declared plans to extend sit-ins to additional cities in protest against the imposition of a petroleum levy and rising inflation.
While addressing the participants of a sit-in on Monday, Hafiz Naeem mentioned that JI has initiated sit-ins in various locations, including Hyderabad. Protests were conducted in Balochistan on August 22, with a sit-in scheduled to commence there on August 29.
He accused the ruling authorities of robbing the citizens and stated that Jamaat-e-Islami has revealed the ‘plunder’ perpetrated by those in power.
Hafiz Naeem urged the public to visit markets, capture images and videos of overpriced goods, and encourage others to join the sit-in. He believes that a social media campaign will keep the rulers alert.
He further stated that a list with the signatures and names of millions will be compiled and presented globally, insisting that the levy must be repealed, or else the government will face collapse.
He criticized the rulers for imposing heavy taxes, including levies, on the impoverished population, noting that over 8,000 billion rupees have been collected in levies.
Additionally, he condemned the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and the capacity payments in the electricity sector, claiming that the government has entered into unlawful agreements with IPPs.
