IHC suspends PTI founder, Bushra Bibi’s sentence in Toshakhana case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday suspended the sentences given to the PTI founder and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the Toshakhana case.

A two-member panel from the Islamabad High Court presided over the case’s hearing. The IHC Chief Justice, Aamer Farooq, stated that the appeal against the sentences would be scheduled for a hearing after the Eidul Fitr holiday.

It should be noted that the PTI founder and his wife, Bushra Bibi, received a 14-year rigorous imprisonment sentence in the Toshakhana case.

Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir announced the verdict in the Toshakhana case at Adiala Jail, barring both from holding any public office for the next 10 years.

The judgment prohibited Imran and Bushra from occupying any public office for a decade and imposed a fine of Rs787 million each. Previously in December, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) registered a new reference against them in an accountability court for keeping a jewelry set gifted by the Saudi crown prince, which was alleged to have been undervalued.

The following month, they were both formally charged in the reference by the same Islamabad accountability court. The anti-corruption agency accused them of accepting a total of 108 gifts from various state leaders and international figures during his time as prime minister.

Bushra Bibi challenged her conviction on February 17, one day subsequent to Imran challenging his in the cipher and Toshakhana cases. She also objected to a government notice designating her Banigala home as a sub-jail after the sentence.

Then, on February 27, the IHC took up the appeals against their convictions and ordered the trial court records to be provided by March 7.
