Election 2024: PTI joins MWM & JI, PPP vote for PMLN Govt

Five days following general election, the two rival parties, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), have declared their intentions to establish a government.

The PTI is creating alliances with religious groups, while the PPP is collaborating with the competing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN).

On Tuesday, PTI’s leaders stated that their independent candidates intend to form a federal government and a government in Punjab province by allying with the smaller party Majlis-e-Wahdat-Muslimeen (MWM).

The party also said its candidates in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province would ally with another religious party, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), to form a government.

Thursday’s elections delivered a split mandate with no party securing a majority in the National Assembly. Independent candidates affiliated with jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s PTI won the most seats. But to form a government, they still need to be part of a political party or a coalition.

In announcing the coalition plan on Tuesday, PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan said he had been mandated by Khan to approach all political parties other than the “PPP, PMLN and MQM”, or Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

“Imran Khan has a clear message that formation of a government is the right of who had won the elections,” Hasan said at a press conference in Islamabad.

According to the provisional results, the results for 264 out of 266 seats of the National Assembly have been announced. In one constituency, NA-8, election could not be held due to the killing of a candidate, while the result of another has been withheld by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

According to the results announced so far, independent candidates have managed to win 101 seats. It is worth mentioning that out of these 101 independent candidates, 92 are supported by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf while nine are general independent candidates. PML-N is in the second position with 75 seats, while the PPP has won 54 seats. The MQM won in 17 constituencies of Pakistan.
