Bollywood superstar Salman Khan criticized the misuse of Artificial Intelligence by certain users and called for criminal penalties against those creating fake videos.
Khan raised the issue during an appearance on “Bigg Boss 20” and advocated for stringent enforcement measures against those who violate regulations. The remarks have been widely shared across digital platforms.
The actor expressed concern that AI advancement has become “alarming”. “When someone creates an AI-generated video or performs AI voice dubbing, it is inappropriate. Artificial Intelligence has advanced significantly, which is deeply concerning. This represents a critical issue,” he stated.
“If you say something and someone uses AI to manipulate and distort it for abuse, what does that demonstrate?
Khan emphasized the necessity for regulatory oversight. “Currently, individuals unfamiliar with AI-generated content might believe Salman Khan was actually present. However, those who understand this reality yet deliberately produced the video—what does that say about their character? Such individuals deserve legal consequences.
Legislation must be enacted, and social media platforms require content moderation,” he concluded.
Deepfake videos and images of public figures have emerged as a significant problem, with increasing amounts of such material appearing on various online channels.
Actors such as Rashmika Mandanna, Katrina Kaif, Ranveer Singh, and Alia Bhatt, among numerous others, have experienced the harmful effects of deepfake material.
Mandanna was among the initial actors to publicly address this concern through a social media statement in 2023 following the emergence of a deepfake video featuring her likeness. She described deepfake material as “profoundly disturbing”, and received solidarity from multiple celebrities including Amitabh Bachchan and Naga Chaitanya.
