Punjab CM Pervaiz Elahi wins vote of confidence amid opposition ruckus

Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi early Thursday morning successfully won the vote of confidence as 186 lawmakers of Punjab Assembly voted in his favour.

In a typically chaotic session held during early hours of Thursday, Elahi managed to get a vote of confidence from the Punjab Assembly after the opposition walked out claiming that the vote was “bulldozed” and “unconstitutional”.

The vote of confidence that commenced after midnight concluded with the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) coalition showing majority in the provincial legislature with the support of 186 lawmakers – the minimum number of votes required to win the trust vote.

Punjab Assembly Speaker Sibtain Khan chaired the session in which PTI leader and Member Punjab Assembly Mian Aslam Iqbal tabled a resolution expressing confidence in the Chief Minister.

Earlier, Secretary Punjab Assembly briefed the members on the voting process. In the meantime, opposition staged a protest in the Punjab Assembly. The members of the joint opposition tore copies of the agenda.
