Field Marshal Asim Munir, who serves as both Chief of the Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff, arrived in Tehran on Friday as part of ongoing mediation efforts, the military’s media wing reported.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement that on arrival he was received and warmly welcomed by Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in a cordial reception. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi was also present at the reception.
Security sources had earlier said the CDF had departed for an official visit to Iran. According to those sources, the visit is expected to include high-level discussions on the US-Iran talks, regional peace and stability, and other matters of mutual interest. During his stay, the Field Marshal is also expected to hold meetings with senior Iranian officials and other key personalities.
Meanwhile, a Qatari negotiating team also arrived in Tehran on Friday, in coordination with the United States, to help secure a deal to end the war and resolve outstanding issues, a source with knowledge of the matter told Reuters.
Doha, long regarded as a calm intermediary in conflicts from Gaza to other international flashpoints, had until now kept its distance from mediating the Iran war after coming under attack from Iranian missiles and drones during the latest escalation.
“A Qatari negotiation team is in Tehran on Friday,” the source said, adding that the delegation traveled in coordination with the United States and is there to help “reach a final deal that would end the war and address outstanding issues with Iran.”
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Although Pakistan has served as the official mediator since fighting began, Qatar’s renewed engagement reflects its longstanding role as a U.S. ally in the region and its reputation as a trusted back-channel between Washington and Tehran.
Last month, CDF Munir concluded a three-day visit to Iran, where he emphasized the need for dialogue and de-escalation to secure a peaceful resolution to the U.S.-Iran conflict through diplomatic means, the military’s media wing said in a statement.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, accompanied by a delegation, held meetings with Iran’s leadership.
“During the visit, the field marshal called on the President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, and held separate meetings with the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf; Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi; and Commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Headquarters Major General Ali Abdollahi,” the ISPR said.
