Syed Refaat Ahmed sworn in as Bangladesh’s new chief justice on Sunday (August 11, 2024) a day after Obaidul Hassan stepped down as the top judge following an ultimatum by the protesters demanding a revamp of the judiciary.
Bangladesh’s newly appointed chief justice, Syed Refaat Ahmed, paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Monday.
Protesting police officers have announced the withdrawal of their strike.
Inspector Zahidul Islam and Constable Shoaib Hasan, representatives of the strikes, made the announcement following a meeting at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday, according to media reports.
Police had been assured that most of the demands they had placed before the government would be met, they said, adding that they hoped everyone would return to their duties.
The Bangladesh Police Subordinate Employees Association declared the strike on August 6, following clashes across the country between police and students during protests.
The meeting at the home ministry was chaired by Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain, the home affairs advisor, and attended by the inspector general of police (IGP), the director general of RAB and other officials.
Recently, several police officers were killed and injured during the student protests.
