Amjad Hussain, an Advocate and leader of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), was sworn in as Gilgit-Baltistan’s new chief minister on Monday following the PPP’s victory in the 2026 regional elections.
Governor Syed Mehdi Shah administered the oath at a ceremony in Gilgit attended by senior PPP leaders, elected representatives and other dignitaries.
After taking the oath, Amjad Hussain said the PPP had become the largest party in the June 7 elections and thanked people across the region for their support. He paid special thanks to young people and women for their active participation, saying PPP candidates had secured voters’ confidence in their constituencies and expressing gratitude to those who gave the party an overwhelming mandate.
He said the people had renewed their trust in the PPP, noting the party’s bond with Gilgit-Baltistan that spans three generations, and highlighted that the party had won a significant mandate in Diamer for the first time.
Amjad Hussain noted that voters backed the PPP despite the party not being in power at the Centre. He thanked the party leadership for its continued support and acknowledged the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for helping to facilitate the formation of the provincial government.
He was elected unopposed after no other candidate filed nomination papers. Representing the GBA-1 constituency, Amjad Hussain became the fifth chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan and serves as president of the PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.
