Leading Pakistani singer Sajjad Ali has issued a clear clarification about copyright after performing his celebrated song ‘Ravi’ on an Indian television reality show.
In a candid video posted to Instagram, he stated plainly that he has not given permission to any Indian TV channel to use his songs or to claim their copyright. He described the recent reports as misleading and asked viewers and media outlets to stop spreading speculation.
Sajjad Ali specifically addressed the uproar surrounding his performance on Season 10 of the Indian singing reality show Voice of Punjab Master Champs, reiterating his respect for artists’ rights and calling for proper licensing and attribution.
At the beginning of the video, he thanked his fans around the world and said, “I am deeply grateful to all my fans who listen to and like my songs, especially those who make cover versions. Whenever such videos reach me, I watch them closely and often share my feedback.”
Sajjad Ali explained, “I heard some things in recent days that compelled me to record this explanatory video. Recently I saw a clip on social media in which two young children performed my song ‘Ravi’ on a Punjabi TV program in India.”
He added that the broadcast created the impression in Pakistan that he had refused to allow children to sing his songs on Pakistan Idol while granting permission to an Indian channel. He strongly denied those claims, saying, “I have not given the copyright of my songs to any Indian channel. They used our song without permission — they neither sought my permission nor obtained any approval; they broadcast the song live. My legal team will now contact the concerned channel about this matter.”
Referring to the earlier Pakistan Idol controversy, he said, “For almost a year my position has been misrepresented. My words have been distorted, which I deeply regret.”
