
The federal government’s debt rose by Rs18,832 billion in the first 28 months of the current period, with significant increases in both domestic and external borrowing, as reported by documents from the State Bank of Pakistan.
The documents indicate that the domestic debt of the federal government grew by Rs16,766 billion, while external debt increased by Rs2,066 billion from March 2024 to June 2026. This rise equates to an average daily increase of over Rs22.40 billion in debt.
As per the documents, the federal government’s debt was recorded at Rs64,810 billion in February 2024, the last month of the caretaker government. After the addition of Rs18,832 billion over the next 28 months, the total debt reached Rs83,642 billion by June 2026.
The State Bank documents reveal that the central government’s domestic debt was Rs42,675 billion in February 2024, which escalated to Rs59,441 billion by June 2026.
In a similar vein, the federal government’s external debt was Rs22,134 billion in February 2024 and increased to Rs24,201 billion by June 2026.
