The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has published its report detailing the damages incurred from this year’s monsoon rains, which include 29 fatalities and 203 injuries resulting from rain-related incidents throughout the province. Additionally, the authority has issued a new alert to local administrations in anticipation of the third wave of monsoon rains.
As per the PDMA report, the majority of deaths were attributed to the collapse of mud and poorly maintained houses, as well as lightning strikes and electrocution during the current monsoon season. The report also noted that 52 houses experienced partial damage due to the heavy rainfall, and six livestock animals were reported dead.
The PDMA Director General has instructed district administrations to maintain a heightened state of alert in light of the forthcoming third wave of monsoon rains, cautioning about the potential for urban flooding and flash floods in various regions. Authorities have been directed to ensure readiness and implement precautionary measures to mitigate risks.
The PDMA chief indicated that the highest number of fatalities resulted from the collapse of roofs of aging and unsafe structures. Residents have also been urged to avoid contact with exposed electrical wires and utility poles during rain to prevent electrocution.
In accordance with the Punjab government’s policy, financial aid ranging from 1 million to 5 million is being allocated to the families of individuals who lost their lives in rain-related incidents.
