In a major development in the case over the character assassination of superior court judges on social media, the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested eight suspects in Lahore.
According to NCCIA officials, the suspects ran a defamatory campaign against judges of the superior judiciary on social media, sharing and circulating content intended to mock, insult, and damage their reputations.
The NCCIA has submitted a detailed report to the Lahore High Court (LHC). Justice Ali Zia Bajwa is scheduled to hear the related petition later today.
Earlier, the LHC directed the Director General of the NCCIA to appear in person on January 15 and ordered the agency to prepare a comprehensive list of individuals who posted defamatory content against judges.
The court also made clear it would pursue the matter to its logical conclusion and warned that, if further such posts are found online, responsibility would rest with the Director General of the NCCIA.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing and more arrests may follow as efforts continue to curb misuse of social media and to protect the dignity of judicial institutions.
