During his address to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Tuesday, United States President Donald Trump referred to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as a “terrific man” while reiterating his involvement in resolving the Pakistan-India conflict in May 2025.
In a speech addressing the Iran conflict, artificial intelligence, and critiques of the UN, Trump reiterated the various conflicts he claimed to have helped resolve.
“Since assuming office, I have had the privilege of assisting in the settlement of eight wars, and through these efforts, I have developed positive relationships with the leaders of numerous nations involved,” Trump stated.
He emphasized that these conflict resolutions were achieved through his “excellent diplomatic relations” and strategic use of tariffs.
When enumerating the countries involved, he identified “Pakistan and India” among the disputes he had helped settle, along with Thailand and Cambodia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, and the Gaza situation, among others. He noted that nearly all of these nations had sent him letters expressing gratitude for his contributions.
“The prime minister of Pakistan—a terrific man—stated that Donald Trump was instrumental in saving 30 million lives, and potentially significantly more,” he continued.
Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated in April 2025 following a deadly terror attack targeting tourists in occupied Kashmir, which was attributed to Islamabad without substantiation, a claim Pakistan categorically denied.
The nations engaged in a series of reciprocal military actions that concluded in May when Trump announced a ceasefire, an achievement he has frequently referenced in subsequent remarks.
On multiple occasions, he has also commended Chief of the Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir, describing him as a “highly respected general,” a “great fighter,” and “my favourite.”
