Pakistan, Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia have reached an agreement to further formalize their defense collaboration under the Makkah Agreement for Joint Defence. The three nations have also committed to fostering regional de-escalation and pursuing peaceful resolutions to ongoing crises.
On Monday, foreign and defense ministers, along with the chiefs of defense forces and general staff from the three countries, convened in Istanbul as part of the Strategic Political and Defence Committee established through the Makkah Agreement.
Following their meeting, the three nations issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to collaborate under the agreement to foster sustainable peace and stability in the region.
The statement emphasized that the countries would persist in supporting initiatives aimed at de-escalation and restraint, with the goal of promoting peaceful resolutions to regional conflicts.
New Secretariat
The nations agreed to implement additional measures to institutionalize their cooperation under the Makkah Agreement. These initiatives are designed to bolster solidarity among the three states, enhance the credibility and effectiveness of their collective deterrence and defense, and support broader regional efforts towards cooperative security and a fair, inclusive, and lasting peace.
As part of this new institutional framework, a Secretariat will be established in Saudi Arabia, led by a Secretary General to facilitate trilateral cooperation.
Initially, the Secretariat will be directed by a Secretary General from Pakistan for a term of three years.
This arrangement aims to create a structured mechanism for coordinating the countries’ efforts under the Makkah Agreement as they strive to enhance their strategic and defense collaboration.
Defence industry cooperation
Pakistan, Turkiye and Saudi Arabia also agreed to strengthen the defence capabilities and cohesion of their armed forces through joint activities.
The joint statement identified robust defence industry cooperation, joint technology development and production as key areas for closer collaboration.
The three countries said they would pursue these initiatives as part of efforts to deepen practical cooperation and strengthen their collective defence capabilities.
They further stressed that resolute and institutionalised implementation of the Makkah Agreement would enable the three countries to make essential contributions to regional peace and stability.
The meeting was held in Istanbul on Monday under the Strategic Political and Defence Committee framework established by the Makkah Agreement for Joint Defence.
