The spokesperson for the Pakistani military stated that the nation’s long-term security relies not just on military capabilities but also on sound governance. He emphasized the need for structural reforms if necessary to enhance administration and public service delivery.
During a press conference on the security situation in the country held on Friday, Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, Director General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), asserted that governance is a vital component of national stability. He contended that many of Pakistan’s enduring issues cannot be addressed without enhancing the administrative framework and ensuring that constitutional mechanisms effectively serve the public.
Lt Gen Chaudhry highlighted that good governance is crucial for the security of Pakistan, noting that numerous challenges would persist unless significant improvements were made in the functioning of the state. He remarked on the dramatic growth of Pakistan’s population over the years, while the administrative structure has largely remained the same.
“In 1972, our population was approximately 70 to 80 million. Today, it has surged to around 250 million,” he stated, pointing out that despite this fourfold increase, Pakistan still operates with the same four provinces.
He indicated that the evolving demographic landscape necessitates a serious evaluation of whether the current governance model is adequate for the country’s current and future requirements. The DG ISPR underscored that any administrative reforms should always align with the Constitution.
“If an administrative reset is necessary to achieve good governance, then it should be implemented,” he remarked.
He further noted that decisions regarding governance challenges should be made through constitutional processes, with public opinion being a key factor in these discussions.
“If the people are satisfied with the existing governance system, then that is their decision. If they are not satisfied, then the matter should also be resolved according to the Constitution,” he said.
Lt Gen Chaudhry maintained that constitutional processes provided the appropriate path for addressing governance issues and determining future administrative arrangements.
The military spokesperson reiterated that strengthening governance was directly linked to improving public services, national stability and Pakistan’s overall security. He said effective administration would help address many of the issues facing citizens while reinforcing state institutions.
