Trump impeached for ‘inciting’ US Capitol riot in historic second charge

Donald Trump has become the first president in US history to be impeached twice after the US House of Representatives found him responsible for inciting last week’s deadly riot at the Capitol.

The House voted 232-197 to impeach Trump on Thursday (AEDT) with just a week remaining until the end of his presidency and the start of the Biden administration.

“Today, in a bipartisan way, the House demonstrated that no one is above the law, not even the president of the United States,” Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi said afterward.

The Senate will not hold a trial before January 20, when Democrat Joe Biden assumes the presidency, meaning the real estate tycoon will escape the ignominy of being forced to leave early.
