The Supreme Court restored the local bodies of Punjab

The Supreme Court declared the Punjab Local Government Section 3 against Article 140A of the Constitution and restored the local bodies of Punjab.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed while hearing the local body election case said that a law can be made under Article 140 but institutions cannot be abolished.

Its pertinent to mention that the previous local body system was dissolved in Punjab two years ago after which all the metropolitan corporations and union councils were abolished. Administrators were appointed under the new local government system.

The Chief Justice said that how can you explain that the people should be kept away from the elected representatives, you have been wrongly advised to bring an act, the government has a status whether it is federal, provincial or local government. Yes, options can be changed, infrastructure can be improved.

The court said that section 3 of the Punjab Local Government Act is unconstitutional, local body governments of Punjab should be restored, the people elected local body representatives for 5 years.

The Chief Justice said that they could not be allowed to be sent home on the basis of a notification.
