President issues an ordinance to hold senate elections through open ballot

President Arif Ali issued an ordinance to hold Senate elections through open ballot. The ordinance makes the Senate election subject to the opinion of the Supreme Court on the pending presidential reference.

Sections 81, 122 and 185 of the Election Act 2017 have been amended.

According to the ordinance, secret voting will take place if the Supreme Court gives its opinion in accordance with Article 226 of the Senate Election Constitution.

According to the ordinance, if the Supreme Court declares the Senate election under the Election Act, open voting will take place.

The Elections Amendment Ordinance 2021 will be applicable across the country. In case of open voting, the head or representative of the political party will be able to request to see the vote.
