Pope Francis, in a step towards recovery, has been liberated from the mechanical breathing apparatus as his condition improves after a respiratory infection that had placed him in critical condition, according to a Vatican announcement on Sunday.
‘Today, too, the Holy Father’s clinical condition has remained stable,’ the Vatican stated. Pope Francis no longer requires non-invasive mechanical ventilation but is on high-flow oxygen support. Notably, he is free from any fever.
Even as the Pope shows progress, his prognosis is considered ‘guarded.’ Overnight, he rested peacefully and took part in Sunday Mass, as detailed by another update about the Mass. The Pontiff wrote to his parishioners, ‘I feel in my heart the “blessing” hidden within frailty, for it is in such moments that our faith and trust in the Lord are enriched.
I thank God for letting me experience the plight of many sick and suffering individuals, both in body and spirit.’ He expressed his gratitude, saying, ‘I wish to thank you for your prayers, lifted to the Lord from countless faithful hearts worldwide: I am touched by your affection and nearness, and at this significant time, I feel as though I am being “carried” and supported by all of God’s faithful. Thank you all!’
