Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurats Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit Two
Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurated Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit Two, K2 Nuclear Power Plant is a state-of-the-art Generation Three nuclear power plant.
The inauguration ceremony of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant Unit Two is underway. Prime Minister Imran Khan is also present in the ceremony.
The K2 Nuclear Power Plant is a state-of-the-art Generation III nuclear power plant equipped with state-of-the-art safety and security arrangements. This includes internal and external security and accident prevention, as well as state-of-the-art emergency prevention and response capabilities.
Construction of the plant began in November 2013, and with the formal approval of the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority, the installation of nuclear fuel began on December 1, 2020.
The technical inspection, which included various tests, was carried out at the end of February and after the physical tests of the plant on March 18, 2021, it was connected to the national grid to gradually increase power generation.
So far, Pakistan has about 1,400 MW of nuclear power generation. With the addition of another 1,100 MW after the inauguration of K2, it will almost double.
