Justice Yahya Afridi, who was nominated last night by the distinguished Special Parliamentary Committee (SPC), is preparing to take the oath as the forthcoming Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) this Saturday.
CJP Qazi Faez Isa is scheduled to retire from his position as the leading judge on October 25.
With the enactment of the 26th Amendment, the process now dictates that the chief justice shall be appointed upon the recommendation of the Special Parliamentary Committee. This appointment is to be made from among the three most senior Supreme Court judges.
In the past, it was the president’s prerogative to appoint the ‘most senior judge of the Supreme Court’ to the position of CJP. According to this previous convention, senior puisne judge Mansoor Ali Shah was earlier poised to ascend to this eminent position.
