Country being destroyed in organised manner: Justice Faez Isa

Pakistan’s Supreme Court Justice Qazi Faez Isa, while hearing petitions related to local body elections in the country, remarked that the country is being destroyed in a systematic manner, everyone in opposition is declared traitor and supporter of the government is considered patriot. 

Hearing the petitions on Thursday, Justice Qazi Faez Isa said he has no qualms about saying that the media in the country is not free and how it is being controlled.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that he knew how the real journalists are being thrown out of the country. He said that when the media is destroyed, the country is also destroyed.

During the hearing of these petitions, when it came to media freedom, Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that a referendum could be held on this question from the journalists present in the court room.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked journalists in the courtroom that those who think media is free in the country should raise their hands. No journalist present in the courtroom raised his hand to this question.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked the second question that those who think that media is not free in the country should raise their hands then all the journalists present in the court room raised their hands.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa asked Attorney General Khalid Javed what is his opinion from ‘Yes, No or Unknown’ options on which the Attorney General pleaded with the court that there is no fourth option which caused a laugh in the courtroom.

Justice Faez Isa remarked that this is the first referendum which has resulted in 100%.

The head of the bench asked the attorney general why you are stifling the media to which the attorney general did not respond.

Justice Faez Isa remarked why the government is so keen to hear its praise. He said that in a democracy there is freedom of expression, but here people are being banned from speaking. He said that with the demise of democracy, half of the country was separated.

Regarding the abolition of local bodies in Punjab, the country’s largest province in terms of population, Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that the Punjab government had violated the constitution by taking this step.Addressing the Additional Advocate General of Punjab, he said that the opposition would continue to be eliminated till the government of its choice comes. He said that Pakistan was built for democracy and not for dictatorship.

He questioned the Attorney General about shifting the responsibility of not holding elections in local bodies to the Election Commission. Attorney General said that the Election Commission has also spoken about the unavailability of resources.

Justice Qazi Faez Isa said that where is the shortage of funds, nowadays the Prime Minister is talking about giving development funds of Rs. 50 crore to each member of the Assembly.
