In a sweeping victory, Premier Doug Ford and his ruling Progressive Conservative Party have been re-elected in Ontario, Canada. The election, which was heavily underscored by trade tensions fueled by U.S. President Donald Trump, showcased Ford’s determination to defend Ontario’s economy from American tariffs.
Seeking what he described as the “largest mandate in Ontario history,” Ford’s party secured a commanding presence with at least 74 seats in the 124-member Legislative Assembly and maintained a lead in seven additional districts as of Thursday night, as reported by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
“We’re committed to safeguarding the people of Ontario, their families, and their livelihoods,” Ford, 60, declared passionately in an interview with CTV News after his victory. “I’ll fight tooth and nail against Donald Trump. I promise you that.”
Throughout the spirited campaign, Ford donned a “Canada is Not for Sale” hat and confidently embraced the persona of Captain Canada. He called for elections more than a year in advance, asserting the necessity for a robust mandate to steer the province through the anticipated economic upheavals under Trump’s administration.
